The National Workers' Housing Fund Institute (Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores, INFONAVIT) is Mexico's main housing assistance agency (Texas n.d.). It was established to help Mexican workers purchase homes (ibid.).

In a 6 May 2009 interview with the Research Directorate, a senior advisor with the transparency and access to information service (Gerencia de Transparencia y Acceso a la Información) of INFONAVIT provided the following information.

There are two search options on the INFONAVIT website. The first, and most popular, option is to search by social insurance number (Numero de Seguro Social, NSS). With this number, a worker can access his or her own credit file on INFONAVIT, which contains information on the worker's access to credit. Although the worker's home address is not displayed when using this option, the name of the employer(s) could appear on the screen, strictly for identification purposes. If the user clicks on the employer's name, the worker's credit access information will be displayed. The employer's address is not posted. If the person has an uncommon name, the list of employers will not be displayed.

The second option is to search using the worker's name and date of birth, which provides the user with the NSS (this makes it easier for workers to access their file on the INFONAVIT website).

Employers have access to their own file on the INFONAVIT website. This file contains information only on the company's own employees. The Senior Advisor did not specify what information is available. He added that the employer or the employer's legal representative is given an access code for the file.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim for refugee protection.
