United Kingdom
A year after formally triggering the start of Brexit, significant concerns remain about rights and protections derived from EU law after the UK leaves the EU. Attacks in London and Manchester left 36 dead and over 250 injured and revived problematic calls to bypass encryption and remove extremist internet content without appropriate safeguards. A public inquiry began into a 2017 fire in an apartment block in London, much of it social housing, that left 71 dead and hundreds homeless. The UK resettled some Syrian refugees and reactivated a scheme to help unaccompanied children without family ties, but continued to detain asylum-seeking children.
