Reports on the treatment specifically of Muslim League members/supporters by the Shiv Sena in the state of Maharashtra since January 1996 could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Please note, however, that Indian and international human rights groups have accused the Shiv Sena of "instigating violence against Muslims" in the January 1993 riots in Bombay that resulted in the deaths of between one and two thousand people, the majority of whom were Muslim, (HRW 1995; AFP 24 May 1996; IPS 2 May 1996).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
