Several sources report on current relations between Muslims and Hindus in Gujarat State, exploring several topics including Hindu-Muslim rioting, communal segregation, discrimination, and police and political violence. A 4 August 2000 article reported that, following the killing of Hindus by Muslim militants in Kashmir, "four people had been killed and 20 injured in Hindu-Muslim clashes in the western Indian State of Gujarat" (AFX European Focus). According to a Dawn article, the deaths occurred in Surat when members of the Hindu militant Bajrang Dal group enforced a protest shutdown (5 Aug. 2000). The Gujarat Home Minister was quoted in Dawn as saying that they had arrested "'more than 150 people in Surat, and three people in (the state capital) Ahmedabad who attempted to burn down a Muslim tomb'" (ibid).
