Sources currently available to the DIRB do not refer to forced marriages in Punjab. However, the attached New York Times article provides information on arranged marriages among the Sikhs, while six other attached articles elaborate on forced and arranged marriages in rural and urban areas of India. Finally, the attached sections of Discrimination Against Women and The Indian Penal Code provide information on the role of the Indian legal system in protecting women.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
