Côte d'Ivoire
Although Côte d’Ivoire continues to distance itself from the successive and bloody political crises of 2000-2011, many of the root causes of past conflict remained unaddressed, particularly entrenched impunity, unreformed security services, a politicized judiciary and simmering conflicts over land. Former president Laurent Gbagbo and his ex-youth minister are on trial at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity during the 2010-2011 post-election crisis; however, the vast majority of perpetrators of human rights abuses during a decade of political and ethnic violence have not yet been held accountable.
