UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that he expects a deal in January to reunify Cyprus.
Ban's remarks come after a two-day conference in New York with the Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.
Ban described those talks as "positive, productive, and vigorous."
He said both leaders gave him assurances "that they believe that they can finalize a deal."
Cyprus is divided between Turkish Cypriots in the north and Greek Cypriots in the south.
A UN peacekeeping mission has been manning a ceasefire line between the two communities since Turkish forces invaded the island in 1974.
The Greek Cypriot part of the island is a member of the EU and UN while the north received no such recognition.
