No mention of a group called "Mutualité des jeunes hutus au Kivu" (MIJEHU) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. The following information, however, may be of interest.

During a 6 May 2003 telephone interview, the Director of the Promotion and Support of Women's Initiatives-PAIF, a Goma [capital of North Kivu] based women's non governmental organization, stated that she is not aware of the existence of a group called "Mutualité des jeunes hutus au Kivu" (MIJEHU). However, she explained that a "mutualité" is a kind of organization in which some persons share and lobby for common interests (PAIF 6 may 2003). Mutualités might be formed on ethnic, cultural, professional, religious or gender backgrounds (ibid.). She cited the examples of mutualité of students, mutualité of doctors, mutualité of Christians and mutualité of Banyamulenge. The Director of PAIF added that in both North and South Kivu, there are hundreds of mutualités.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
