Information on whether the Italian Communist Party or its successor, the Democratic Party of the Left, was involved in assisting illegal aliens in obtaining work or residence permits could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.
However, the Director of the Centre for Migration Studies in Rome told the DIRB during a 22 November 1995 telephone interview that political parties in Italy cannot legally help illegal immigrants to obtain work or residence permits. The Director added that this is true for the Democratic Party of the Left, the successor to the Italian Communist Party. The Director also indicated that organizations like trade unions and immigrant protection agencies, some of which are affiliated to political parties, can legally provide such assistance.
