Please find attached a copy of some documents which deal
with the situation of health care in Guatemala, including
information on a recent strike by employees of the Guatemalan
Social Security Institute (IGSS) and the position of the nurses'
union regarding this strike. Only one available source, however,
does have specific references to health care promoters in rural
areas. The 1990 book Guatemala: A Country Guide refers in
page 95 to the victimization of health care promoters between
1980 and 1988.
Information on the present situation of health care
promoters in rural areas, however, could not be found among the
sources currently available to the IRBDC.
