In a 16 January 1998 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the human rights observer for the Zacapa regional office of the United Nations Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) stated that there have been no registered complaints of guerrilla activity in Bananera Morales, a village located in the municipality of Morales dependent on fruit groves, since it began its human rights verification mission in November 1994. The observer added that the only area in the department of Izabal where residents lodged complaints against guerrillas of the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG) was in the municipality of Estor, near Izabal lake.

An official at the Morales municipal office stated that the Dr. Pedro Molina College exists in the town of Bananera Morales, but added that he was unaware of any incidents involving URNG guerrillas in the town or at the school (16 Jan. 1998).
