Information on the possible ill-treatment in the Federal Republic of Germany of Mennonites who emigrated from the Soviet Union is not presently available to the IRBDC in published sources.
For information on this topic, the IRBDC contacted the office of the World Mennonite Conference in Carol Stream, Illinois. In a telephone conversation held on 4 October 1989 with a representative of the World Mennonite Conference, it was pointed out that the government of the Federal Republic has gone out of its way in facilitating the resettlement of Mennonites from the USSR in the FRG. This has had a strong, positive impact on the resettlement of Mennonites in Germany. The representative added that he has heard of some cases wherein the arrival of Mennonites from the Soviet Union caused "a bit of community resistance." However, it was stressed that if discrimination occurs, it is sporadic and the World Conference has not received systematic complaints of specific discrimination from resettled Mennonites.
