Information on demonstrations by members of the opposition in Accra after the elections, is currently unavailable to the DIRB. Following the declaration of the election results in Accra, opposition parties charged that there were electoral irregularities and demanded that the publication of the results be withheld suspended until the irregularities were investigated (DIRB 7 June 1993). In Kumasi supporters of the National People's Party (NPP) reportedly staged demonstrations and attacked and damaged the house of the National Democratic Convention chairman (ibid.). Although the police stormed the NPP headquarters and arrested some members, the elections were generally conducted in a peaceful manner in the rest of the country (DIRB 7 July 1993). "The opposition did not organise formal demonstrations even in cib cities" (ibid., 14). For additional information on the elections, please refer to the attached documents.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
