The press freedom situation was satisfactory, but the temporary suspension of two television stations caused concern.
Prime Minister Sam Hinds ordered the privately-owned TV stations NBTV 9 and CNS TV 6 to stop broadcasting on 19 December 2002 for two days on grounds they had put out programmes inciting racial hatred and threatening civil peace. He said he was only following the recommendations of the independent Advisory Committee on Broadcasting. A High Court judge authorised to stations to resume broadcasting a day later.
