Information on the kidnapping of Afghan mujahideen members and their families by the Taliban from Surkab refugee camp near Quetta could not be found among the sources consulted by the DIRB.
However, the following information may be of general interest.
According to an eyewitness who recently returned from Charasiab and spoke with Radio Message of Freedom, for the first time since the fall of Najibullah's regime, the Taliban "have been press-ganging people and forcibly borrowing local people's vehicles in Logar Province, Maydanshar and in other areas under their control. They force each household to give up one person to do hard labour" (Radio Message of Freedom 23 Mar. 1996). Corroboration could not be found by the DIRB among the sources consulted.
Response to Information Request AFG23462.E of 29 March 1996, available at Regional Documentation Centres, briefly discusses forced recruitment by the Taliban in Herat.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
