The Angolan office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was informed by Angolan government officials that the age of retirement from active duty in the military is 45 years (29 July 2003). The UNHCR was also informed by the same sources that it is mandatory for men between the ages of 20 and 45 years to complete two years of military service (UN 29 July 2003).

Specific information regarding the ability to resign one's commission could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate; however, for information on exemptions from performing military service, please consult AGO41675.E of 5 August 2003, AGO41322.E of 5 March 2003, AGO39461.E of 9 July 2002 and AGO39448.E of 9 July 2002.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
