Please find attached a two-page excerpt from the Czech Government's August 1998 Policy Statement of the Government of the Czech Republic. The final paragraph of page 5 and the first five paragraphs of page 6 discuss the possible establishment of a human rights observance mechanism, possible amendments to the citizenship law, education programmes designed to promote tolerance and multiculturalism among the population and programmes designed to increase the education level of Roma. The policy statement promises that the Government will "not press only for criminal prosecution of particularly dangerous attacks under the provisions of the Criminal Code now in force, but also for administrative methods of protection against discrimination" (Government of the Czech Republic Aug. 1998, 6). The Government will also "see to it that governmental authorities proceed consistently in the repression of perpetrators of racially motivated criminal offences" (ibid.).

The entire 26-page Policy Statement of the new Czech Government is available in English at Regional Documentation Centres.

This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
