During the week of Eid, overall levels of political violence decreased by 45% in South and Southeast Asia. The decrease in political violence was caused by a significant drop in reported events from Afghanistan (minus 52%) and Pakistan (minus 74%) – two high activity countries which also have a majority Muslim population – while violence levels remained static in India, including the majority Muslim state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Jun 19, 2018-Liping Bazaar in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchok, has witnessed several erosions and minor landslides in the recent days.

Some of the residents have vacated their homes and moved to Chowkidanda where they hope to be safe in case of major landslides.

The area, situated close to Tatopani, a town bordering Nepal and China, has suffered several disasters in the last three years, from the devastating earthquake of 2015 to the massive flood in the Bhote Koshi river that swept away 261 homes.

IFRC launches report on labour migration and trafficking

Sexual violence and abuse are beginning to be recognised as a major problem across the international aid industry. According to the ‘Report the Abuse’ survey, 86% of aid workers know a colleague who has experienced sexual violence associated with their work. Yet sexual violence in humanitarian settings is rarely reported as a security incident. Aid agencies are not reporting sexual violence numbers.

Confronted with global crises in Myanmar, Syria, and elsewhere, many world leaders have forgotten Nepal’s decade-long civil war, which ended in 2006.

The need for justice in Nepal remains. But the international community today is absent on transitional justice issues in which so much was once invested, including the hopes of victims.

In the South Asia region, flash floods account for a significant portion of the casualties and property damages that result from flooding. Given that flash floods can occur at any time or place, with potentially disastrous results, there is an urgent need to prioritize efforts that aim to improve early warnings capabilities.

Nepal, 14 June 2018: The Department of Political Affairs has responded to the request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal for the closure of the DPA Liaison Office in Kathmandu after successfully fulfilling its mandate. In consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Liaison Office will be closed within the next three months.

Important developments in South and Southeast Asia this past week included ceasefire negotiations in Afghanistan, continued cross-border violence between Pakistan and India, and several protests throughout the region in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

In a surprising move from both sides, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani declared a unilateral ceasefire on June 7 over the Eid holiday period, which was accepted by the Taliban on June 9. This is the first time that the Taliban has accepted a temporary ceasefire offered by the government (Al Jazeera, 9 June 2018).
