ALMATY – The wife of the jailed chairman of Kazakhstan's top uranium producer, Kazatomprom, says she is being threatened by the National Security Committee (KNB), RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Dzhamilya Dzhakisheva said in Almaty that the KNB has threatened her and spouses of other jailed former Kazatomprom executives, urging them to be quiet and not talk too much about their husbands' arrests.

Kazatomprom Chairman Mukhtar Dzhakishev and several of his deputies were arrested last month for alleged financial wrongdoing and theft.

Their wives and lawyers say the accusations are baseless.

Rakhat Aliyev, the fugitive former son-in-law of President Nursultan Nazarbaev living in self-imposed exile in Austria, told RFE/RL in May that Dzhakishev is being targeted because of his association with prominent businessman Mukhtar Ablyazov, who fled Kazakhstan after investigations into his financial activities were launched earlier this year.
