The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the ruling party in the semiautonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq, finished as the top vote-getter in the region's September elections, the election commission said on October 20.
Masud Barzani's KDP won 45 seats in the vote, ahead of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the junior partner in the ruling coalition, which won 21 seats.
The vote was held on September 30, but results were only announced on October 20 after the election commission received and investigated more than 1,000 complaints of electoral violations.
The largest Kurdish opposition party, Gorran, or Movement for Change, took 12 seats.
The Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament has 111 seats, with 11 of them reserved for minority groups.
The KDP and PUK fought a civil war in the 1990s but have in recent years formed coalitions to share power.
