An official of the Embassy of Bulgaria in Ottawa could not provide information specific to whether Canadian divorces are recognized in Bulgaria (16 Mar. 1994; 21 Mar. 1994). The official indicated however that no agreement on legal aid exists between Canada and Bulgaria which would cover this issue (ibid.).

Country Reports for 1993 indicates that there are no governmental or non-governmental organizations providing support specifically to victims of domestic violence (1994, 822). This source also indicates that marital rape is recognized as a crime, however it is rarely prosecuted (ibid.). This is the only new information currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa regarding the availability of redress for women victims of spousal abuse since the Response to the Information Request BGR15510 of 14 October 1993.

For information on redress available to victims of rape, please consult Reponse to Information Request BGR15177 of 29 November 1993 available at your regional documentation centre. This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
