Information on an attempted coup on 3-4 May 1989 in Benin is currently not available to the DIRB.

However, an article in New African talks about "rumours" that were "circulating in reliable French intelligence and diplomatic circles that a coup [was] brewing in Mathieu Kerekou's Benin" (March 1989, 26). The article notes that the rumours "base their calculations on sources within Kerekou's own army," and the observation that "only a small proportion of Kerekou's 12,000 strong army, police and gendarmerie are loyal to him" (Ibid., 26).
