Comments | The Federal Government of Nigeria is adopting this Policy on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) due to the challenges of internal displacement and the plight of displaced population as a result of conflicts in one form or another, natural disasters and other causes. While it is important to take proactive action to prevent internal displacement by addressing its causes, Government also acknowledges the need to ensure protection of displaced population and their fundamental human rights, mitigate their suffering where and when displacement has occurred and establish a harmonised response accordingly. This Policy also contains strategies for the achievement of durable solutions for displaced populations, with the end objective of ensuring that they no longer have specific assistance and protection needs that are linked to their displacement and have opportunity to make informed decisions as to whether to voluntarily return to their places of origin, be integrated into the host communities or relocated to other parts of the country |
