A UN inter-agency initiative, involving UNHCR, the Global Compact Network Brazil and UN Women, the Empowering Refugees project is focused on the employability of women who are in refugee situations.
It was created in 2015 and encourages refugee women’s access to the Brazilian labor market through training, private sector awareness and interiorization to several Brazilian locations.
Among the objectives of the project are to train refugees for the Brazilian labor market, facilitate cultural and labor adaptation in Brazil, promote the formal hiring of refugees and financial education and economic empowerment as a strategy to combat violence against women.
Since its creation, over six years, more than 250 women have participated in the initiative, the result of an investment in training, employability and interiorization of families. The project – with editions held in São Paulo (SP) and Boa Vista (RR) – also focuses on valuing diversity and inclusion, and is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting their achievement with the private sector.
Among the pillars of the project are the appreciation of diversity and inclusion. Throughout its history, the Empowering Refugees project has had entire classes dedicated to women with disabilities, chronic diseases and special needs.
