As of end May 2022, there are some 182,960 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.
- Some 157,040 are from Myanmar, comprising some 104,330 Rohingyas, 23,030 Chins, and 29,680 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
- The remaining individuals are some 25,920 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,700 Pakistanis, 3,770 Yemenis, 3,320 Syrians, 3,160 Somalis, 3,000 Afghans, 1,570 Sri Lankans, 1,200 Iraqis, 780 Palestinians, and others.
Some 67% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 33% are women.
There are some 46,570 children below the age of 18.
UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country.
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.
According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
