ACAPS OVERVIEW

Overview

Burkina Faso is facing a complex multi-faceted crisis due to the increasing activities of armed groups (security), inter-community tensions (protection), chronic food and nutrition insecurity, floods and high winds (natural disaster) and COVID-19 (public health crisis).  Increasing insecurity has led to massive displacement of people, both within their own regions and to other parts of the country. This security challenge has led to the closure of some basic social services while limiting their access by vulnerable populations such as women, children, people living with disabilities, the elderly, etc. Between February 2018 and January 2022, more than 1 741 655 people were forced to leave their homes to find protection in other municipalities. They are arriving in localities that are facing the closure of health facilities and schools due to the violence. More than two million people in non-displaced communities are severely affected by the deterioration of their living conditions, which has made them dependent on humanitarian assistance. The lack of resilience prospects for many thousands of families continues to increase the number of people vulnerable to shocks. Thus, for the Humanitarian Response Plan - HRP 2022, 3.5 million people will need humanitarian assistance in 2022, and almost 58% of them are children.

ACAPS' team is daily monitoring the impact of COVID-19. Find more information related to the outbreak here.

Lastest Developments

14/07/2021: On 11 July, at least eight people, including seven members of the militia working alongside the armed forces, were killed in an attack by a non-state armed group in Nahi-Mossi village (Centre-Nord region). Several houses and the market were burnt and cattle stolen. Displacement towards neighbouring localities was reported (exact figures and needs are not yet available).

07/07/2021: On 7 June, armed groups gave the populations of Madjoari in the eastern region an ultimatum to leave the commune. Seven villages out of eight have been emptied of their inhabitants. Around 1,000 people out of 14,000 are still in the commune according to local authorities. Access points are controlled by armed groups, who also established an embargo. As a result, shops and pharmacies are almost empty. Those who stayed in the commune are experiencing shortages of essential goods and a significant increase in prices of available items. Local sources report that a litre of gasoline costs nearly five times the usual price, and a litre of cooking oil costs nearly four timesPeople who managed to leave fled to surrounding communes (Koalou, Nadiagou, and Pama) or to Benin (Porga), where around 1,000 newly displaced people are reported. The displaced need food and shelter assistance.
