There are no known cases of Malaysian refugees seeking asylum abroad (U.S. Department of State, p.914), which explains why it is very difficult to document their fate if returned to their homeland. Malaysia, however, does not recognize the right to foreign travel and puts restrictions on the issuance of passports and visas (Hannum, p.78). Illegal residence in Malaysia can be sanctioned by prison terms and fines (Aznam, p.36-37). The Malaysian government is also closely monitoring the opposition, sometimes denying passports to dissidents accused under the Internal Security Act ("Malaysia Judge"; Terry; "Top Malaysian").
