Diede de Groot had a spectacular 2018, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and Masters singles titles to become the latest in a long line of women’s wheelchair tennis world No. 1s from the Netherlands.
The Dutch also joined Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot among the Dutch wheelchair tennis player to top the singles rankings since the retirement of Esther Vergeer in 2013.
She also won the doubles events at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open; and led the Dutch to a remarkable 30th title at the World Team Cup.
De Groot ended the year atop of the singles and doubles world rankings.
Her first singles Grand Slam title came in 2017, when she won Wimbledon. That same year, she claimed the US Open doubles trophy and took the Masters title.
The extremely talented player also enjoyed a fantastic 2016, making 18 finals. At the Rio 2016 Paralympics she claimed doubles silver and narrowly missed out on singles bronze.
De Groot was previously number one on the girls’ tour, where she won the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters singles title in 2013 and 2014 with a doubles title also coming from the same tournament in 2014.
