When and where did you begin this sport?
He joined his high school swimming team following his accident in 1996. He initially competed against able-bodied students, until a year later when he began competing in para-swimming competitions.
Why this sport?
“I went back to swimming because that’s what I’d done most of my life, and I wanted to get back to my life. I always came in last [when competing against able-bodied students], but I just wanted to be part of the team."

He broke his neck at the age of 16 in a surfing accident. He came off his surfboard in shallow water, crashing head first into a sandbar. He spent a week in hospital, two months in rehabilitation and half a year undergoing physical therapy. (US Paralympics, 04 Mar 2010; teamusa.org, 01 Sep 2008)
