He has competed in swimming at the Paralympic Games, winning a silver medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens in the 50m backstroke. He took up wheelchair basketball in 1991, and has coached and played for wheelchair basketball team Kaunas RSK in Lithuania. Impairment
After finishing high school he was called up to serve in the Soviet military and was sent to Arkhangelsk, Russian Federation. While there he developed an inflammation of the spinal cord, which he attributes to the bitterly cold temperatures. At the time he was told by medics that he had a spinal tumour that had to be removed. Following the operation he had lost all feeling in his body below the armpits. (kauno.diena.lt, 01 Oct 2003)

He has a PhD in social sciences and has worked for the Lithuanian Sports University as an associate professor, research and project manager, and coach of the wheelchair basketball team.
