He began swimming at the age of eight, after his friends invited him to be the fourth swimmer in a relay competition.

Before his accident he enjoyed success as an able bodied swimmer. He was 1999 NCAA champion in the 200m breaststroke, he helped the United States break the world short course record for the 4x100m medley relay in Moscow in 2002, and competed at the World Championships in 2003.
