When and where did you begin this sport?
He started swimming as a child in his hometown of Mount Sinai, New York, after moving there from Germany at the age of seven.
Why this sport?
Swimming was suggested to his mother by their neighbours, who had three kids that all swam, and he took to the sport immediately. Frequent eye surgeries left him unable to take part in contact sports so swimming proved to be the perfect outlet for him.

Impairment
His vision loss is the result of a connective tissue disorder called Stickler Syndrome, a congenital condition which causes retina detachment as well as cleft palate, hearing loss, high myopia, cataract and potentially arthritis. He lost vision in one eye at age six, and in the other eye at the age of 14 due to retina detachment. (US Paralympics, 05 Mar 2010)
