Complementary Education Pathways

UNHCR and partners are creating complementary education pathways that offer protection and solutions in third countries through higher education scholarships and opportunities. Key considerations for third countries when developing complementary education pathways through education include:

  • Access to legal status in the country where the opportunity is provided – including support to obtain the necessary travel documents and the possibility for the refugee to remain in the third country after completion of the study programme;
  • Participation in the programme should not jeopardize the rights, legal status or other protection afforded to refugees under international law;
  • The programme should take into account factors such as the cultural context and availability of education documentation, as well as language, individual support, financial and other needs expressed by refugee students;
