About Asmir

Footballer and AC Milan goalkeeper, Asmir Begović, was forced to flee his home in Bosnia and Herzegovina at a young age, first arriving in Germany before moving to Canada. Following his tough start in life, the goalkeeper has enjoyed an illustrious career, playing for some of the biggest football clubs in the world. In 2014, Begović represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the country’s first-ever World Cup.

Speaking about his journey as a refugee, Asmir said: “It definitely instilled that resilience and mental toughness in me. I saw things first-hand that kids shouldn’t see. To come out of those circumstances and do what I’ve been blessed to do for many years now, no negative times get me down. It definitely humbled me. I know what it’s like to be a refugee.”

Asmir has been supporting UNHCR since early 2020, using his public profile as a professional footballer to raise awareness and fundraise in support of refugees. In April 2020, Asmir competed against Alphonso Davies of FC Bayern Munich in a Pro Evolution Soccer tournament to raise funds for UNHCR’s COVID-19 response. The event was viewed by more than 1.3 million people across the world. You can see the highlights of the tournament here

Asmir also has his own foundation, focused on helping children in need in England and Bosnia through sports.
