Statement on passing of Professor Gil Loescher

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Professor Gil Loescher, an intellectual leader in refugee studies, a tireless advocate of the refugee cause and a valued friend to UNHCR.
As a pioneering scholar in refugee law and policy, his unwavering commitment to refugees and to finding ways to best ensure their protection was evident in all his work.
He was a source of deep inspiration and support to UNHCR and to many of its staff, working with us on many projects at headquarters and in the field. His scholarly work and insights have helped us over the years to find ways to strengthen and improve our performance in the service of displaced people worldwide.
His passing is a loss for the entire UNHCR family and all who knew and were inspired by his work.
My deep sympathies go to his family and loved ones.
