Bulk upload

1. Prepare upload file

Use the Borehole bulk upload to enter new borehole records and modify existing ones.

We recommend downloading the Borehole Excel template to enter your data. Using this document ensures your data complies with the dataset constraints. Expert users can directly edit the country CVS export.

Note that the bulk upload function CAN'T BE USED to delete borehole records. Boreholes not appearing in the bulk upload file will remain untouched in the database.

Please be aware that this tool can make substantial changes in the database, use it carefully.

Using the Excel template file

Click on the "Download Excel template" button below to get an empty Excel file that will guide you to create boreholes from scratch.
Open the template and read the Instructions tab carefully.
If you just want to add boreholes, you can start filling the columns.

If you want to upload an existing borehole and your country already has records in the database, you may export the corresponding CSV file through the "Download borehole data" tab . Then, copy-paste the boreholes you need to update to the "Boreholes" tab of the template file.

When copy-pasting, make sure the columns match to avoid validation errors.
You can then modify the boreholes you want to update. If you have a new borehole to upload, add as many records as you need in the "Boreholes" tab, always respecting the rules of the section below. In both cases, please check that you respect the rules listed below.
Once the boreholes are ready and you think they are correctly formatted, save the "Boreholes" tab as CSV (File menu > Save as > Select the desired folder in the file dialog > Select CSV as file type > Click Save) before referring to the section below.

Using only the country CSV exports (for experienced users only)

First, go to the "Download borehole data" tab and download the data for the relevant country.
Open the file, remove the lines for all the boreholes that you do not need to change and then modify the existing boreholes or create the new boreholes -make sure that you respect the rules of the section below.
Then please save your file in CSV format format before referring to the section below.

Important rules to respect

Make sure that you only import boreholes for one country at a time.
The mandatory fields are the following: Iso3, Local Borehole ID, Status, Last editor, Date of update, Latitude, Longitude, Type of pump and Energy source (in case of electric pumps). All fields will expect a certain type of data (values amongst a list, numerical data, date formats…). Don’t hesitate to download and refer to other countries of the Borehole database if in doubt concerning possible values.
If unsure how to fill the Iso3 column for your country’s code, please refer to the UN Trade Statistics' knowledgebase. Make sure that you only import boreholes for one country at a time.
Make sure that the "Automatic Borehole ID" column for any new boreholes is empty (the system will then generate them automatically upon import).
All imported data that include an "Automatic Borehole ID" will overwrite boreholes in the database with the same IDs. All imported data with IDs that do not exist in the current database will be rejected.

Always download the latest version of the template, as we are regularly introducing upgrades and improvements.

Make sure that you use the latest template available on the app before updating or uploading records. The template might change over time as we regularly introduce updates and improvements.

2. Verify & Upload the Borehole file

Return to the "Upload borehole data" tab and select your CSV file through the file dialogue.
On import, if the file or the data is not valid, the app will let you know by displaying the errors in question. Make the necessary changes in your CSV and reimport the file.
Once the file is accepted, you can verify that your data has been correctly read by the import wizard and click on "import the data" if that is the case.
