About Biko

Jackson Biko is a renowned Kenyan writer, publisher and author, who is a High Level Influencer of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's LuQuLuQu campaign

Biko uses his storytelling talent to bring his readers closer to the life of a refugee, vividly narrating stories of struggle, resilience and hope as described by the refugees he interacts with during his visits to refugee camps.

Biko’s first trip with UNHCR was to Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, where he interviewed refugees on their experiences. Biko has also travelled with UNHCR to South Sudan, where he visited IDP settlements in Juba and the remotely located Maban refugee camp. In Maban, widely regarded as the most isolated refugee camp in the world, Biko focused on intimate discussions with refugee couples to understand how they fell in love, and how marital life in a refugee camp differed from that in a more conventional setting - stories on which he based written pieces for his wide readership in Kenya and beyond.

Biko is eager to continue using his writing skills to tell individual refugee stories and act as conduit to help raise awareness and funds for the refugee cause. His blog, “There were birds but they didn’t sing”, which narrates the journey of a refugee Biko met in Kakuma Refugee camp, received great public interest in Kenya.

Biko has also interviewed UNHCR LuQuLuQu campaign High Level Influencer Tresor during the Step for Safety - the first ever public walk to support families forced to flee.
