UNHCR Ready to Assist Rohingya Refugees Stranded in Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced it will work together with the Aceh government to help 94 Rohingya refugees stranded in North Aceh.

UNHCR protection associate, Oktina, on Thursday, thanked the locals and administration who teamed up to rescue the group of Rohingya people off the coast of Lancok Beach in North Aceh.

"The UNHCR is ready to assist the regional government in terms of quarantine and other necessary needs," said Oktina amidst of the evacuation process at the Lancok Beach, June 25.

"We are really grateful for the evacuation process, at least they are safe here and they are rescued after months at sea."

Oktina said the organization has yet established a plan to whether move the refugees to the North Sumatra refugee camp as it will wait for further decisions taken by the local government. The Rohingya refugees consist of 15 men, 49 women, and 30 children.
