13th Charity Refugee Film Festival
Stand with refugees amidst COVID-19 for our shared community
The Charity Refugee Film Festival enters its 13th year and is moving to a dedicated online screening platform* due to the pandemic. Our audience can now stay indoors to enjoy the films and understand the lives and struggles of refugee families.
In the light of the World Refugee Day on 20 June, our film festival is going to be held from 13 June (Saturday) to 30 June (Tuesday). You can get an online film ticket via your registered email by donating HK$80 or above on our designated webpages for this event and watch the film on our screening platform* anytime as you desire within the festival period.
The fundraising target of this film festival is HK$300,000, which is enough for constructing 300 tube wells to provide refugees with clean water in the dire situations under COVID-19. If everyone can contribute a little, our concerted effort can bring positive impacts to the surroundings, as our tagline of this year’s World Refugee Day –

*The screening platform is limited to Hong Kong and Macao regions only.

Film Details
Three refugee documentaries have been selected for the film festival this year: “Midnight Traveler”, filmed by Afghan director Hassan Fazili by phones using a first-person perspective. “69 Minutes of 86 Days” features a 3-year-old Syrian girl following her family in the journey to safety. “Day One” gives us strong reflections on the education and assistance provided to refugees to overcome cultural differences.
“Midnight Traveler”
When the Taliban puts a bounty on Afghan director Hassan Fazili’s head, he is forced to flee with his wife and two young daughters. Capturing their uncertain journey, Fazili shows firsthand the dangers facing refugees seeking asylum and the love shared between a family on the run.
“Day One”
Day One follows a group of teenage refugees from war-torn countries who are enrolled at a unique public school for refugees and immigrants-only in the U.S., where they are guided through an inspirational program of education, healing and trauma intervention by devoted educators. We watch the kids progress through layers of grief and loss as they attend school, forge new friendships, and prepare to be mainstreamed into local public high schools.

On a path littered with lifejackets, in the middle of a crowd of people on the run, a 3-year-old girl slowly emerges. Full of a child’s energy and curiosity, she takes in her surroundings between hundreds of adult trouser legs. She understands the gravity of the situation she and her family find themselves in, but filled with childlike wonder she continues her journey. For every step she takes, she emanates a longed-for feeling of hope. To Lean, it’s a step closer to her grandfather in Sweden.

Since 2007, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has been organizing the Refugee Film Festival in Hong Kong for thirteen years. This event is also simultaneously hosted in places including Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Australia to mobilize support for people forced to flee their homes. As the refugee crisis captures headlines globally, UNHCR believes that the power of art will touch the hearts and minds of the audience and will offer public a new perspective to view this too, often misunderstood or misrepresented subject.
