About Alphonso

Footballer and FC Bayern Munich player Alphonso Davies is considered one of the best left backs in the world. Alphonso was born in a refugee camp in Ghana to Liberian parents. When he was five years old, he and his family were resettled in Canada. At just 16, he became the youngest player to ever score for the Canadian national team. In January 2019, he moved to FC Bayern Munich for a then record MLS transfer fee, before helping the team to win the German championship later that year.

I want to use my platform for causes that I care about,” said Alphonso. “As a former refugee myself I am very grateful for the help my family received, and the opportunities this opened-up for me and where it has brought me.

Alphonso has supported UNHCR since early 2020, using his social media platforms and his public profile to raise awareness and fundraise in support of refugees. In April 2020, Alphonso was interviewed by English football star and TV host Gary Lineker, speaking about his support for UNHCR. Alphonso also competed against Asmir Begović of AC Milan in a Pro Evolution Soccer tournament to raise funds for UNHCR’s COVID-19 response. The event was viewed by more than 1.3 million people across the world. You can see the highlights of the tournament here.
