UNHCR’s Field Unit Dogharoun (FUD) was established in September 1992, primarily to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of refugees returning to Afghanistan.
Currently, FUD is the only Border Exit station for Afghan refugees in Iran.
FUD is located inside the BAFIA compound at the Iran‐Afghanistan border, where other partners including BAFIA, the IRC’s Mine Risk Education Centre and MOH’s Health Post are stationed.
Given the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan over the recent years, voluntary repatriation has notably declined.
However, the economic situation in Iran has been an encouraging factor for an increasing number of refugees to opt for voluntary repatriation, despite the precarious security situation in Afghanistan.
