At the forefront of solidarity, Germany plays an instrumental role in implementing the Global Compact on Refugees and co-convened the Global Refugee Forum in December 2019.
Germany’s support through flexible funding allows UNHCR to protect and assist displaced people in some of the largest emergency situations anywhere in the world, including in South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen. Vital protection activities such as the prevention of and response to sexual and gender-based violence, or child protection programs are made possible thanks to Germany’s support. However, Germany’s commitment to refugees goes far beyond financial contributions alone. As the largest refugee-hosting country in the European Union and a steadfast supporter of the Global Compact on Refugees, Germany sets a powerful example to the world on the need for increased responsibility-sharing.
Germany’s strong support for the principles of the Grand Bargain, including increasing the transparency and predictability of humanitarian aid, fully aligns with UNHCR’s priorities.
