UNHCR’s Zahle Office covers the entire Bekaa area, comprising two governorates (Bekaa and Baalbeck Hermel) and spanning an area of more than 4,400 square km – nearly 40 per cent of the total size of Lebanon.
The Bekaa’s governorates contain five districts, 166 municipalities and 14 unions of municipalities. The Lebanese population in the Bekaa valley is estimated at 1,000,000 residents.
As of 31 October 2019, the total number of registered Syrian refugees in the Bekaa stands at 342,875 individuals. UNHCR’s office in Zahle works with over 50 operational partners, has agreements with 11 partners that implement projects, and a network of 232 refugee volunteers who work daily to assist the Bekaa’s 76,358 refugee families.
