UNHCR collaborates with Airport Rail Link for World Refugee Day
All over the world, refugees forced to flee travel approximately two billion kilometres every year to reach the first point of safety. Today UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, launched the “2 Billion Kilometres to Safety” Airport Rail Link train in partnership with S.R.T. Electrified Train Co., Ltd. or Airport Rail Link.
“The special Airport Rail Link train will bear an important message to raise awareness amongst commuters of the dangerous journey refugees take each day,” said Giuseppe de Vincentiis, UNHCR Representative in Thailand. “With the global refugee crisis, everyone can be part of making sure that refugees are able to seek safety.”
The “2 Billion Kilometres to Safety” Airport Rail Link will run throughout June to commemorate World Refugee Day on 20 June.
“Safe journeys have always been our top priority in daily operations,” said Sutep Punthupeng, Chief Executive Officer of S.R.T. Electrified Train Co., Ltd. “World Refugee Day helps to remind us of the millions of refugees who also need safety and security in their lives.”
The S.R.T. Electrified Train Co., Ltd. extends their support to UNHCR and its High Profile Supporter, Wannasingh Prasertkul, by hosting a Story Exhibition, “Serenity in Chaos” to raise funds for and awareness about refugees at Airport Rail Link’s Suvarnabhumi station.
“I have experienced tough journeys all over the world, but they are nothing compared to the plight of refugees who often need to make extraordinary efforts to survive,” said Wannasingh Prasertkul, UNHCR High Profile Supporter. “I have witnessed people living with the sounds of gunshots and bombs in war zones. But the courage of these people that strive to survive these horrors awakens my soul and makes me realize the beauty, humanity, serenity, pain and happiness behind the conflicts.”
Serenity in Chaos: Story Exhibition by Wannasingh Prasertkul is the first solo exhibition following a decade of global travel by Wannasingh. The story exhibition highlights his memories and stories from 71 countries around the world reflecting HUMAN, NATURE, CIVILIZATION and WAR. Net proceeds from the purchase of exhibition photos and souvenirs will go directly to UNHCR under NAMJAI FOR REFUGEES campaign to support the lives of refugees around the world. The Exhibition will be showcased at Airport Rail Link’s Suvarnabhumi station from today until 30 June 2019 with free admission.
