UNHCR assists with emergencies in 134 countries—across 546 locations.

Right now there are over 70.8 million men, women and children displaced by violence, conflict and persecution worldwide. We have thousands of staff directly helping the most vulnerable victims who have fled war, disaster or persecutions. We host offices in donor countries worldwide and wherever refugees are arriving, working closely with governments to ensure the 1951 Refugee Convention is honoured.

UNHCR provides essential services to refugees all over the world. We release core relief items such as blankets, water and medical supplies within 48 hours for around 600,000 refugees and people affected by conflict in simultaneous emergencies. We also provide relief for internally displaced people, which has risen to 41.3 million.

Forced Displacement

UNHCR’s 2018 Global Trends Report warns of a dangerous new era in worldwide displacement. The global population of forcibly displaced increased by 2.3 million people in 2018. By the end of the year, almost 70.8 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations. As a result, the world’s forcibly displaced population remained yet again at a record high.
