Objectif(s)To create an educational tool that increases the awareness of young people in the school system on the subject of refugees.
Results/Impact

The Ministry of Public Education has agreed to use it as part of the “El cole en tus manos” project (High School in your Hands), for the most vulnerable and marginalized schools.

Why is this considered a Good practice?Young people from the local, immigrant and refugee population, jointly created the tool. The young refugees told how they wanted to be represented in the materials while the locals defined ways in which they felt more empathic towards foreigners. The young people also created content that expressed the differences amongst them (reasons for the uprooting, starting over in a strange country) as well as day-to-day issues (music preferences, how to deal with their interpersonal relationships etc.). This created a bond between them, which will hopefully extend to the classroom. The content created were: One board game, five radio programs and one educational module that allows the use of the content either in a classroom setting or on a radio station. The board game helps you to understand the experiences lived by refugees in two different ways: On one side of the board, the threatening situation, the violence and persecution; on the other side of the board, the obstacles and eventual satisfaction when they integration. This is a way for teenagers 15 years of age and older, through a recreational activity, to understand forceful uprooting. This is crucial since one of the main obstacles to empathy, according to a study done by UNHCR, is that young Costa Ricans cannot imagine a context different from their own; hence, they do not understand how an innocent person or child can be persecuted.
