Legal education program for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees in Romania

Know Your Rights is a 9-week legal education program for up to 20-25 asylum seekers, refugees and migrants with various forms of protection (“newcomers”) who are building new lives in Romania.

Between 20 February and 16 April 2020, global business law firm DLA Piper, along with the Representation in Romania of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the National Romanian Council for Refugees, will run the Know Your Rights Project in Bucharest.

Know Your Rights is a 9-week legal education program for up to 20-25 asylum seekers, refugees and migrants with various forms of protection (“newcomers”) who are building new lives in Romania.

If you are a newcomer based in or around Bucharest and want to know more about your rights and duties (related to starting a business, getting a job, healthcare, housing and more) this course is for you!

Who is eligible to apply?

  1. You are over 18 years old.
  2. You speak English or Romanian.
  3. You live in or near Bucharest.

More information

  • The program is free but once you subscribe, we expect you to attend all the sessions regularly.
  • The teachers are lawyers from DLA Piper, some of DLA Piper’s NGO partners and clients.
  • The sessions will take place in DLA Piper’s office at DLA Piper Dinu SCA Metropolis Center 89-97 Grigore Alexandrescu Str. East Wing, 1st Floor Sector 1, 010624 Bucharest.

1. Employment law: basic types of employment contracts, the basics of Romanian labor law and employee rights. Practical advice on how to apply for a job, how to write a CV, a motivation letter, how to conduct interviews and how to follow up after you have been invited for an interview. 20 February 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

2. Romanian judicial system and how to access law: how different courts and administrative organs in Romanian legal system work, the process of dispute resolution, access to legal aid for newcomers and exercising your rights before the administrative authorities. 27 February 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

3. Contract law: fundamentals of Romanian contract law, offer, acceptance, general terms and conditions, remedies (performance, termination of the contract, damages for non-performance) and some common types of contracts such as consumer contracts. 5 March 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

4. Housing law: housing law in Romania, housing contracts, rights of tenants in private accommodation and social housing for refugees. 12 March 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

5. Healthcare system: the right to healthcare in Romania, rights of patients and confidentiality, insurance schemes and various institutions implicated. 19 March 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

6. Personal data protection: How to protect your personal data and image in relation to access to services, what are your rights in relation to the data. 26 March 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

7. Writing, advocacy and negotiation skills: formal writing, advocating for your interests, negotiating contracts and deals. 2 April 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

8. Immigration law in Romania: organizations, procedures and rules related to immigration and asylum law in Romania, family reunification and naturalization. 9 April 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h

9. Entrepreneurship and setting up a business in Romania: how to write a business plan, legal and practical requirements for establishing a business in Romania, how to issue invoices, navigate regulated business activities, how to establish a civil society organization and a social enterprise. 16 April 2020 Thursday 17h – 19h
