UNHCR Sub-Office Kerman (SOK) was established in late 2008 in Kerman city.
The office’s Area of Responsibility (AoR) covers Kerman, Yazd, Hormozgan, and Sistan & Baluchistan provinces situated in the center and south-eastern regions of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Over 111,000 refugees and around 300,000 undocumented foreign nationals reside in SoK’s AoR. About 12% of the mentioned refugee population reside in settlements situated in Kerman and Yazd provinces.
Bardsir and Rafsanjan settlements in Kerman province host a total of 8,100 refugees; and Ardakan, Meybod, and Taft settlements in Yazd province house a total of 4,884 refugees.
Kerman Province hosts the largest refugee population among the four provinces under SOK’s AoR, followed by Yazd, Hormozgan, and Sistan & Baluchistan.
Based on Human Development Indicators of Iran Kerman province is classified as deprived, while, Sistan & Baluchestan, is classified as the most deprived province in the country.
