MINSK – An RFE/RL correspondent in Minsk, who had been detained while covering a one-day strike by the country's entrepreneurs, has been released.
Ihar Karney says he was detained on June 27, along with the chairman of the Perspektiva public union, Anatol Shumchanka, and several others.
After questioning in the police station, all except Shumchanka have been released.
The majority of entrepreneurs across Belarus went on strike on June 27, demanding the government quit the Customs Union, which includes Kazakhstan and Russia.
On June 24, a forum of Belarusian entrepreneurs agreed to start anti-Customs Union actions, saying the union's regulations go against their interests.
The Customs Union, meant to ease trade between the three members, was launched in 2010.
Russian officials say the goal is to create a Eurasian economic union modeled after the European Union by 2015.
