ALMATY – Kazakh Communist Party leaders and the unregistered Alga (Forward) party say that the recent arrest of leaders at Kazakhstan's state uranium company KazAtomProm has political motives, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
Kazakh Communist Party leader Serikbolsyn Abdildin said the arrest of Mukhtar Dzhakishev and his KazAtomProm associates is connected with the case of businessman Mukhtar Abliyazov.
Abliyazov's BTA bank was nationalized by the government and a criminal case was launched into his alleged financial misdeeds earlier this year.
Abliyazov and other bank officials left Kazakhstan to avoid arrest.
Dzhakishev and his three deputies – Dmitry Parfenov, Asklar Kasabekov, and Malkhaz Tsotsoria – were arrested on May 21 for alleged theft, but their arrests were officially confirmed on May 25.
All KazAtomProm employees were instructed not to travel.
